Yamaha and Zildjian Artist Joe McCarthy, founder and leader of Afro Bop Alliance,
is a native of Meriden, Connecticut. He received his BM from
The Hartt School of Music, and his MM from The University
of North Texas. Upon graduation, he accepted a teaching position
at Texas Wesleyan University, Fort Worth, Texas, as Head of
the Percussion Department, and Theory and Aural Skills instructor. Joe is currently an Adjunct Professor and instructor of drumset and Afro-Cuban percussion at Georgetown University in Washington DC. He has presented clinics throughout the U.S.A.
In addition to his teaching, Joe was very busy performing
and recording with organizations such as The Dallas Symphony,
Fort Worth Symphony, Dallas Opera, Dallas Jazz Orchestra and
Pete Peterson's Collection Jazz Orchestra. In 1994, he won
a position with The United States Naval Academy Band, where
he currently holds the position of drummer with the Next Wave,
the USNA's big band, the Superintendent's Combo, and Principal
Percussion Percussionist/drummer with the USNA's concert band.
Joe is a member of The Global Percussion Trio, a dynamic group playing percussion music from all over the world.
Joe has also performed and/or recorded with Poncho Sanchez, Dave Samuels, Michael Mossman, Arturo O'Farrill,
Ray Vega, Michael Formanek, Jimmy Bruno, Chuck Redd, Mitch Seidman, Bill Warfield, and
Corey Christiansen.
Joe resides in the Annapolis, MD area, with
his wife Paula, an accomplished violinist, and two daughters,
Katie and Jenny.
