Felix Contreras plays congas with Afro Bop. His influences
include percussionists Armando Peraza, Mongo Santamaria
and Tito Puente as well as the music of Carlos Santana,
Miles Davis and the Grateful Dead. He has studied Afro-Cuban,
Japanese and Arabic percussion. He has also played with
jazz, Latin and rock bands in California and Miami. Felix
has assisted in percussion clinics with Tito Puente, Poncho
Sanchez and Pete Escovedo and has also performed various
forms of folk music including Armenian, Arabic, Mexican
and Afro-Caribbean. Felix makes his living as a journalist
at National Public Radio in Washington, D.C. producing music
and culture reports.
